Violet Wands

Can someone explain to me how I have been blogging all things BDSM for 18 months and I am yet to talk about what could possible well be my favourite toy? Hmm…. something obviously went wrong there!

As the title says, one of my favourite toys is my beloved violet wand. I say ‘one of my’ because quite frankly, I have quite a few things I am in love with, but this lovely leather box has a special place in my heart.

For those who don’t know what a violet wand is – is a type of instrument used for erotic electrostimulation which is a sexual practice involving the application of electrical stimulation to the nerves of the body using a power source. Apart from violet wands, other popular instruments are TENS or EMS units.

Violet wands were originally electric and neon testers and are used for the application of low current, high voltage, high-frequency electricity to the body. Violet wands can deliver a variety of sharp, cutting, or piercing type sensations – all dependent on the attachment you wish to use.

You can get modern or vintage ones, so of course I got a vintage one because isn’t anything from the past always that little bit nicer? I got mine from Nick and Morphia after having had a demonstration by Nick at a LAM event last year. After some debate we opted for the 1940s 8pc IXU Violet Wand as it had more attachments (these are called electrodes) than the smaller boxes but it didn’t cost as much as the bigger pieces. Because this I will say – vintage violet wands are not cheap. They are some of the most pricey equipment you can get in BDSM but they are worth every penny if elecrostimulation is your thing. And they look amazing on display!

You can get a variety of attachments – each providing a different sensation. Here is what I have in my box:

From Left to Right:

  • Back/Spine
  • Mushroom – excellent general purpose massage
  • Ear – mild but buzzy
  • Fulgarator – with a single wire tip – originally used to burn out warts – very powerful
  • Neck/Throat – or for anything curved
  • Saturation – Often used in Secondary Contact
  • Smaller Mushroom
  • Comb – very sensual, perfect for the head

As with anything vintage – violet wands need TLC and caution should be taken when using it, including how long you use it for as these tend to overheat. Saying this, there is still nothing that comes quite close to it. A must for me!

  1. I’d be curious to try a violet wand again. My first (and only) experience was bad to say the very least. I’ve found that I love TENS units and EMS units. Seems I have more research to do. Thank you for posting about it, as I didn’t know there were other attachments and settings beyond the cutting sensation.

    1. Yes I must admit that certain attachments are just not pleasant for me but the comb or the curve attachement are very gentle and sensual. TENS units are fantastic, I agree!

  2. I enjoy using my circa 1920s violet wand. I bought it on eBay 20 years ago. Still about the best quack medical device I’ve ever owned.
